The Dragon is Coming!
Day 3 of Protect the Castle... Practicing Story Arc
Please watch this overview video.
Managing Day 3
Why do we notice the structure of a story?
- When we notice where we are in the story arc, we can predict what might come next, which makes reading interesting.
- When we notice events, we can understand how the conflict is developing
- Story parts connect with and build on each other, like legos.
- When stories follow patterns, it is easier to read. This is why we love series! We can think more about the characters.
- When TYPES of stories, called "genres," follow patterns, we know what to expect. We can really start to guess how characters will act and what will happen to them. We can also be delighted by surprises in what we expected.
Day 1 of our Adventure, the start of the Quest
If you missed or did not finish, you should start here! We introduce the story arc, remind you of genres, and sort a story.
Day 2, the Dragon's first pass
If you missed Day 2, you might want to see how we scared the dragon off with cannons... But it is coming back!
There must be a way to get the Dragon to stop attacking the castle!
Activity 1: Predict a Happy Ending
Take some notes on the organizer, then return here.
Activity 2: Structure Sort
Sort these story parts into their bins. Will we sacrifice our herd of sheep to the dragon?
Activity 3: The Answers to the Structure Sort
This silly story mixer will also show you the answers: You have to go to your 3 dot chrome settings and change your zoom to 50%.
Wait a minute! We don't want to give our sheep to the dragon. First of all that's mean, and also, we need them!

TA-DA! So THAT'S how we stop the dragon!
Either print or play it in your head... the game won't let you mark the screen. Dragons LOVE gold. The first thing we noticed in this quest was how the towers were flying banner-flags called pennants. TAKE DOWN THE GOLDEN FLAGS! Goodbye Dragon!
